I think the initial motivation... was really to create a legacy piece. If you read the book and you understand that I never met my grandfather. I never met my grandmother. I've got the benefit of some of my grandmother's letters... but with my grandfather, I don't have that. And I thought, what better way to pass on the stories and the life that I lived on to my daughter and my descendants... Well, my mother was a Holocaust survivor. Her father... was arrested in 1938 by the Gestapo... and he didn't survive. He was murdered in January of 1942 in the concentration camps... The trauma that my mother underwent... really formed part of the motivation for me to pursue a career where I could catch the bad guys. It literally was when I was about 11 years old reading an article in Time magazine about Simon Wiesenthal's hunt for Joseph Mengele where I said to my mother, "That's what I want to do."

80 homicides as either the major case manager, primary investigator or file coordinator... Dealing with homicide cases over the years, dealing with a lot of death and trauma... especially some of the murders of children, which are very very hard to deal with and very tough to write about... especially about the Caitlyn Sampson case in 2008, which was absolutely horrific... The Justin and Jerome Waterman case... two brothers who were shot and killed in 2012... one of those cases that was very very tough to put together and solve... It's got so many little pieces... that really had to be gathered and then tied together into reasonable grounds to lay that charge. And then of course through the court process, we had a fantastic crown attorney who did some great work... and got us those first-degree murder convictions... Towards the end of the summer of 2018 where we were dealing with... 98 murders... members of the office visibly were spent and walking around like they were zombies.

Bruce MacArthur... killed, dismembered, and buried in planters eight men from Toronto's gay community between the years of 2010 to 2017... MacArthur's name did not come up until 2013 when he was interviewed... but at that point in time, they were missing persons. We didn't have any evidence that they had actually been murdered... It wasn't until November of 2017 when some blood belonging to Andrew Kinsman is identified in the back of MacArthur's van where we can now say, "Okay, now we have some evidence"... There was what I still think was one missed opportunity and that was in 2016 when MacArthur was arrested for choking a male in the back of his van. Could that potentially have been linked back to the 2013 interview... action been taken on that? It was really three steps removed... that one point of intervention is the one opportunity I think was missed.

I am critical of some of the structure of the police service, some of the culture... There are pitfalls from day one at the police college all the way up to the chief and the command structure... If there's racists in society, you're going to have racists in the police service. If somebody behaves tyrannically towards the recruits, those recruits are going to behave tyrannically towards members of the public... What you really have to look at is value for dollars... the amount of money being put into policing in 2026 is a huge amount... The system within the police service is one where it is virtually impossible to file a formal complaint against a member... who is higher ranking than you... it's going to have a detrimental effect on your career... the complaint processes that are in effect... are completely inadequate and ineffective.
