Original English
Why are some loud critics of the Chinese government tolerated while others are ruthlessly punished? We all know that dissenting online in China is inherently risky, but the reality we see today is full of glaring contradictions. Prominent dissenters like Ai Weiwei were able to visit China recently and praise the trips on their media shows, despite repeatedly violating the regime's political red lines. In contrast, many people who cross those exact same red lines face exit bans, exile, or even multi-year prison sentences and million-dollar transnational bounties.
Original English
If state repression was simply about enforcing the rules impartially, the pattern would be consistent, but it isn't. Elon Musk was sharply criticised by the Chinese government after promoting the Wuhan lab theory on X. Yet his Shanghai Gigafactory continues to expand with the full support of the regime. Meanwhile, the comedian Uncle Roger made a single satirical joke about Huawei phones surveilling citizens, and his entire business presence in China was vaporised overnight. So, what is the governing principle here? What is the strange logic behind China's online policing?
Original English
Speaking personally, as a mainland Chinese music producer who lived in China for nearly 30 years and built a career in Shanghai before moving to the UK in 2021, I've had to navigate this bizarre contradiction myself. After I began performing songs advocating for individual liberty and Hong Kong's freedoms on this channel, Beijing's national security department directed my family in China to demand that I stop. I face prison if I return. And yet my music credits remain perfectly visible in Chinese blockbuster films and TV shows. My collaborations with A-list artists in China quietly continue today.
Original English
This might appear to be mere bureaucratic incompetence. But it is not. It is a highly deliberate, selective online policing architecture. To understand this architecture, we must move beyond the simplistic binary of free speech versus censorship. That framework assumes a rule-based system. China, however, operates on an outcome-based system calibrated entirely to strategic priorities, a reality that many observers misunderstand. This is exactly why I am shifting the focus of this channel from music advocacy to structural analysis. Music preserves liberties, but emotional preservation is not enough. We need concrete frameworks to explain this reality to a modern West that increasingly takes its own liberties for granted.
Original English
In this video, I will unpack how modern autocracy actually functions and analyse two recurring double standards in this architecture that many observers miss. Once you understand these two layers, the contradiction disappears. To unpack this strange logic, we need to understand how and why this selective online policing architecture was built in the first place. As we know, China operates under a one-party system unrestricted by a meaningful constitution, a fact literally codified in the CCP's party charter. Under such conditions, the governing logic differs fundamentally from the classical rule of law. As the Austrian philosopher Friedrich Hayek warned, when a state pursues overarching collective goals without constitutional limits, it abandons impartiality.
Original English
When policing online posts, the question authorities ask is never, "Did you break a rule?" The only question that matters is, "Are you aligned with the state's current strategic priorities?" So what exactly are the Beijing regime's overarching goals and priorities that drove it to build this perplexing architecture? To answer that, we must rewind to the early 1990s. Following the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown, Western sanctions severely challenged the legitimacy of the Chinese regime. Under immense pressure, Deng Xiaoping was forced to make a U-turn reset, giving up strict ideological purity and aggressively embracing Western capitalism, which opened the door to FDI, foreign direct investment.
这次重置的核心,是对STEM(科学、技术、工程和数学)和工业化的极度优先考量。
Original English
At the very centre of the reset was a hyper-prioritisation of STEM and industrialisation. This was designed to achieve the regime's ultimate goal of national rejuvenation, a corrective to a perceived century of humiliation brought about by a lack of technology. That U-turn started a trend of engineers dominating the highest echelons of the party that continues to this day. From that moment on, the regime developed a simple strategic obsession: Technology meant national survival.
Original English
Now consider the historical timing. The World Wide Web was created at the exact same time in 1989. When China connected to the internet in the 1990s, the regime felt ambivalent about it. While it welcomed technological development, it simultaneously appropriated technology transferred from Western corporations like Cisco to construct the world's most isolated censorship infrastructure, the Great Firewall.
Google、YouTube、ChatGPT、Instagram、TikTok、Facebook、X、LinkedIn和WhatsApp。
Original English
To grasp the scale of this, you can visit a site called China Firewall Test and input the Western platforms you use daily. Google, YouTube, ChatGPT, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook X, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp. 99% of them are blocked in mainland China, excluding Hong Kong. From 1998 to the firewall's completion around 2009, almost all foreign online services were systematically purged for refusing to comply with state censorship. Consequently, a vast, isolated and heavily industrialised cyberspace called the 'Chinese Intranet' was born. Today, over 1 billion PRC citizens depend entirely on domestic equivalents of Western platforms, accounting for over 20% of global internet traffic. And by the way, I use 'PRC citizens' here instead of 'Chinese mainlanders' to avoid any ethnic implications.
Original English
It has always been extremely difficult to obtain VPNs that could reliably bypass the Great Firewall. And to be honest, the vast majority of PRC citizens never feel the need to use them. Growing up, I genuinely thought Baidu, Weibo and WeChat were the entire internet. I didn't even know what YouTube was until I studied abroad in 2018. But contrary to popular belief, this intranet wasn't built merely to suppress dissent. It was engineered for what psychologists call digital domestication. Since the dawn of the global information revolution, this intranet has existed to train mainland users to internalise self-censorship in real time. adapting to the regime's shift in priorities.
Original English
We possess a profound muscle memory for avoiding ultimate red lines, such as: Never name the supreme leader; Never challenge the country's founding myth or the autocratic system; Never associate with uh sensitive civil organisations. Step out of line and you face digital isolation, the loss of your primary communication and banking apps, or worse, a catch-all charge of 'picking quarrels and provoking trouble', which carries a 3- to 5-year prison sentence. Over time, PRC citizens learn to remain apolitical, occasionally navigating creatively using coder language to artfully skirt red lines. Locals call this playing the game on hard mode. Explicit dissenters are often ostracised by intranet users for taking the easy mode that only exiles want to play.
Original English
This system perfectly coincided with China's greatest economic boom. From the regime's perspective, the strategy was a triumph. Three decades of massive GDP growth achieved by technological expansion and a massive populace with internalised self-regulation driven by digital domestication.
Original English
This deep-seated bias toward the technological sector leads to the first structural double standard in this architecture. Let's go back to the glaring comparison: Elon Musk versus Uncle Roger. In 2023, Elon Musk promoted the COVID Wuhan lab-leak theory on X to tens of millions of viewers. Instantly, the Chinese government threatened his Chinese business interests. The warning was issued by the Global Times, China's most powerful state media mouthpiece, making international headlines.
Original English
But what actually happened next? Elon never retracted the post. He visited China, continues to run Gigafactory Shanghai, still the world's largest Tesla factory, and maintains an active account on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of X. And just days ago, he crossed another major red line by commenting on how US moves against Venezuela and Iran are setting the stage to deter China's expansionism. Yet, nothing happened to his business in China. In stark contrast, comedian Uncle Roger made a passing joke about Huawei phones surveilling conversations about President Xi. His accounts across all Chinese platforms were instantly vaporised, destroying his ability to conduct business in China overnight.
Original English
This perfectly encapsulates the state's bias, favouring tech and capital whilst brutally punishing humanity's critics. Elon Musk significantly aids in the development of China's EV supply chain. Because his utility aligns with the state, he is welcomed by the regime no matter how many red lines he crosses. Uncle Roger, operating in the humanities, was initially deemed harmless but was instantly reclassified as a potential threat to social stability the moment a tiny red line was crossed. This bias is so deeply entrenched that the regime will selectively abandon its own censorship for the tech sector. While the western internet is blocked, crucial developer platforms like GitHub remain accessible. Why? Because crippling GitHub will cripple China's entire tech industry. Savvy citizens routinely exploit GitHub's decentralised structure to archive censored content like deleted interviews from Wuhan, dodging the police because the state cannot block a specific repository without shutting down the entire site.
Original English
This double standard becomes incredibly dark when individuals switch their professional focus. Consider the divergent fates of two brilliant minds, Li Lu and Ruan Xiaohuan. Li Lu was one of the most wanted student leaders of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. He managed to flee to the US after the crackdown, obtained three degrees at Columbia University, and became a highly successful hedge fund manager. Crucially, he convinced Warren Buffett to invest in the Chinese EV company BYD.
Original English
Through this investment and his steadfast shareholding, even when the stock plummeted by 80%, he enabled the company's transformation from a battery maker into the world's dominant electric vehicle manufacturer. Because his monumental contribution aligned perfectly with the state's goal of dominating frontier tech, the regime simply ignored his active arrest warrant. Since the 2010s, he has become an intellectual superstar in China, lecturing at top universities and maintaining a high-profile Weibo account. So, the man who saved the EV brand that eventually surpassed Tesla's sales volume was once China's most wanted fugitive. Let that sink in.
Original English
On the exact opposite end of this spectrum is Ruan Xiaohuan, the anonymous blogger known as Program Think. He began as a symbol of national pride, a decorated cyber engineer who built information security systems for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But he shifted his focus to the humanities. Running a blog for 12 years that provided anti-censorship tools, political literacy, and mapped the corruption networks tied to China's supreme leaders. He leveraged his unparalleled expertise to hide his digital footprint. However, police eventually caught him through long-term pattern analysis and raided his Shanghai home in 2021. The moment he shifted his identity to a dedicated civic rights defender, he was hunted down, arrested after a decade, charged with inciting subversion of state power, and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
这也是为什么西方误解了最近的Chinamaxxing(中国最大化: 年轻一代在海外社交媒体上过度浪漫化中国科技与基建的趋势)潮流,即中资TikTok上的Z世代用户将中国电动汽车、基础设施和以技术为导向的生活方式极度浪漫化。
Original English
The difference here is not ideology. It is the direction of utility. You can break the rules if you are a prominent builder of the state's technological machine, but you will be ruthlessly crushed if you become a dedicated questioner asking who is driving it. This is also why the West misinterprets the recent Chinamaxxing trend, where Gen Z users on Chinese-owned TikTok dramatically romanticise Chinese EVs, infrastructure, and tech-orientated lifestyles. Many believe this trend means China has succeeded in advancing its technology through illiberal means.
Original English
But the opposite is true. For the state's technological apparatus to function properly, Chinese technocrats are forced to grant some degree of individual liberty to STEM talents while continuously silencing the humanities voices who actually advocate for their very liberty.
Original English
But this structural double standard alone doesn't explain everything. It doesn't explain why a musician like me who is not a tech builder and crossed the regime's red lines still has a business footprint surviving in China. That leads us to the second, much deeper psychological framework. Let's talk about Ai Weiwei. Arguably the best-known Chinese dissident artist in the world. Ai Weiwei created audacious artworks that often directly critique human rights abuses and censorship in China. Authorities imprisoned him in 2011 after he exposed the Sichuan earthquake cover-up. He eventually went into exile. He has clearly crossed all ultimate red lines: criticising Supreme Leader Xi, challenging the system and organising defiant crowds. So why was he able to take a family trip to Beijing safely in 2025?
Original English
More confusingly, compare him to Gao Zhen, an internationally renowned Chinese artist who relocated to the US in 2022. During a family visit in 2024, Gao was detained simply for a satirical sculpture of Chairman Mao he created a decade ago. He has now been secretly held without trial for over 500 days. Gao Zhen and Ai Weiwei share very similar artistic footprints. Gao Zhen wasn't even deemed to have crossed red lines initially. So why the exact opposite treatment? To explain this, we must look at how the regime manages human psychology through two distinct archetypes. Grey-zone navigators and grounded witnesses.
Original English
Grey-zone navigators arise from a defensiveness of PRC citizen identity. It is a deeply ingrained cultural pride, a belief that armed with a rich ancient heritage, PRC citizens have engineered a resilient and shrewd way to navigate the loopholes of authoritarianism, distinct from a naive western open society. They indulge in subtle resistance while normalising some of the prevalent lies told by the regime on a daily basis. They tend not to speak the grounded truth candidly, resulting in a lack of capacity for mobilisation. I must admit most PRC citizens, including myself, are more or less grey-zone navigators. Ai Weiwei, despite his initial grounded defiance, has established a gentrified status in the West based on the profound heritage of Chinese culture. At the same time, with his name censored on the Chinese internet for a decade, his dissent has been detached from the immediate local reality of China. From the regime's perspective, his voice functions as a pressure valve in the West while posing zero risk of inciting mass defiance within China. As a result, the regime views him as a neutral grey-zone navigator.
Original English
Gao Zhen, however, represents another archetype, the grounded witness. They don't base their pride on loophole navigation. Instead, they operate with high agency to simply observe and speak their grounded individual truth candidly. A totalitarian cyberspace relies entirely on endless lies and falsified mass consent. As Hayek understood, that system only survives when individuals forfeit their own memories to the state's collective narrative. When a grounded witness speaks a simple undeniable truth that deeply connects to the local knowledge and the lived experiences of their community, it can easily set off a chain reaction of imitative acts that shatter the falsified reality. Gao Zhen did exactly that. He was part of a new wave of post-pandemic immigration. He witnessed massive raw disillusionment with the regime's disastrous cover-ups and draconian lockdowns. Despite relocating, his connections with local communities inside today's China remain profound and active. In the authorities' eyes, his grounded witness, normalised dissenting art, and overseas experience have given him the ability to inspire and coordinate like-minded PRC citizens to do the same. As a result, the regime punished him.
Original English
Gao's experiences are representative of numerous talented artists, writers, and professionals who gradually learn to speak their individual truth candidly after the pandemic, even in the face of the Chinese government's exit bans, biased policing, or transnational repression. A prime example of this is Chai Jing, an investigative journalist and household name TV celebrity in China. She used to be a masterclass grey-zone navigator who produced groundbreaking documentaries like Under the Dome, investigating China's air pollution, which initially got hundreds of millions of views before being censored. At that time, she spoke grounded truth, but with no record of touching ultimate red lines, the regime tolerated her.
Original English
However, after relocating abroad and resurfacing on YouTube in 2023, she stopped navigating the loopholes. She began speaking with uncompromised clarity about China's reality on the ground and forbidden history, like the one-child policy. Most of her videos reached millions of mainlanders who bypassed the firewall via VPNs. Instantly, she became a grounded witness the regime could not tolerate. Her popular books and documentaries were banned, and massive state-sponsored smear campaigns were launched all across the Chinese intranet to discredit her. Nevertheless, support persists among people in China through covert expressions, including from fellow TV celebrity Cui Yongyuan, who is banned from leaving China yet publicly endorsed her work.
Original English
The regime does not punish based on the size of your platform or how loudly you voice your dissent. It punishes based on your connection to local truth that could trigger mobilisation at a certain time. The Great Firewall is designed to keep citizens perpetually distracted by the exhausting routine of finding loopholes. But the moment an individual stops navigating and bears witness to the truth of their community, they are deeply feared by the regime. If you want the pinnacle proof of how much grounded witnesses are feared by the regime, look no further than Hong Kong. Quickly, before the last section, thank you for making it this far into the video. I'd really appreciate it if you could take a second to hit the like button and subscribe. It truly helps this channel survive in a world of oversimplified narratives. I'm planning an entire series of structural cultural analyses from a Chinese citizen's perspective, and your support makes that possible. Now, let's get back to the topic.

For decades, Hong Kong existed outside the Chinese internet. When I visited the city in 2016, it was a wake-up call. I came to see how historical events like the Tiananmen protests, which we felt too embarrassed to even bring up on the mainland, were memorialised there through exquisite sculptures, books, and rallies. I loved Hong Kong because it was free from the social embarrassment of grey-zone navigation. There were no arbitrary rules to deal with. The city breathed an uncompromised free market of ideas. As a mainlander, I found great value in independent media like Stand News and Apple Daily, uncensored bookshops, universities, and local communities that were incredibly cohesive due to their distinctive Cantonese language and culture.

But in 2019, when a mainland-style wall quietly moved toward the city via the extradition bill, Hong Kongers did not try to negotiate a grey-zone compromise; millions took to the streets to reject the wall and defend their precious liberties. They became a city of grounded witnesses. Jimmy Lai, a British citizen, media tycoon, and Apple Daily founder, could have comfortably maintained his $40 million mainland business as an elite navigator in China. Instead, he became a grounded witness of what was happening to his home. His pro-liberty media platforms, speaking the local truth candidly, held so much inherent power of mobilisation. In solidarity with his media outlets, 2 million people peacefully took to the streets to defend their uncensored way of life.

During the brutal crackdown on Hong Kong's defiance, the Beijing regime launched an unprecedented smear campaign against Jimmy Lai on the Chinese intranet. They deliberately use Cultural Revolution-era terms that PRC netizens are intimately familiar with, labelling him the leader of the 'Hong Kong Gang of Four'. By artificially manufacturing massive public outrage among mainlanders, the Beijing regime was emboldened to sentence him to 20 years in prison last month, despite intense international pressure. Jimmy Lai chose to remain in Hong Kong knowing he would face imprisonment, demonstrating the pinnacle of China's harsh, selective policing architecture against truth-telling voices capable of mass mobilisation. Jimmy Lai represents thousands of the most politically savvy and conscientious people imprisoned simply for witnessing and speaking the same undeniable truth in Hong Kong. He also represents hundreds of thousands of Hong Kongers who fled their homes facing transnational repression and million-dollar bounties, yet still form cohesive communities united by their belief in the power of truth. Their unwavering solidarity forced the Beijing regime to totally abandon the idea of implementing the Great Firewall in the city, for now.

This structural reality explains why an ordinary mainlander like me might be strangely regarded as half a grey-zone navigator and half a grounded witness. My quiet presence on the Chinese internet preserves the illusion of stability for mainland navigators. But the moment I crossed the red line, joining the Hong Kong diaspora in the UK to bear witness to their grounded truth, I gained a truth-telling capacity that could inspire like-minded mainlanders to do the same. And that is exactly what the regime fears. I hope this analysis makes it explicitly clear why the rule of law and constitutional constraints are non-negotiable in a civilised society.

The strange logic of this formidable yet fragile and contradictory online policing architecture reveals a profound arrogance. The Beijing regime desperately desires the shiny technological and economic fruits of the free world. Without acknowledging that freedoms are the very roots that grow them. In navigating this contradictory system, countless individuals have willingly paid an enormous price in speaking up for individual liberty, human dignity, and basic civic rights. These rights are not just abstract concepts enshrined in the library. They are our absolute lifelines. If this breakdown helps you see past simplistic media narratives and understand the reality of China and beyond, hit the like button and subscribe to this channel. I have many more life experiences to unpack in the future regarding China and the West. Share this video with anyone who is tired of geopolitical caricatures and wants to understand how modern autocracy actually functions on the ground. I want to hear from you: what other double standards have you noticed in the Chinese online policing system or in the algorithms of the social media platforms where you live? Let me know down in the comments and let's keep the discussion going. I'll see you in the next video.
