Original English Source Caroline Mulroney... one of Doug Ford's senior-most cabinet ministers announced this past week that she is resigning not just from cabinet, not just from her job as the Minister for Treasury Board... but as an MPP. She's standing down... she offered that she's had some major milestones in her life recently including her kids have left the house and so she and her husband are empty nesters now... her role in the party was more than just the job she held... she served to add some authority and credibility to the party.

A bunch of developments in the Ontario Liberal family... Nathaniel Erskine-Smith who got some tough news from the special tribunal looking into his complaints about just how kosher the Scarborough Southwest provincial nomination meeting was. Erskine-Smith lost his bid for the nomination by just 19 votes... the panel ruled that the candidate's alleged irregularities were not examples of corruption and did not affect the outcome of the vote.

Another former Liberal MP has announced that he is in... for the Ontario Liberal leadership. And I'm talking, of course, about the former federal cabinet minister Navdeep Bains who dropped a 14-second social media video... he is a former Trudeau cabinet minister... very popular... very large and devoted following in particularly the Western GTA South Asian community.

Original English Source The legislature has passed Bill 9, the Municipal Accountability Act... currently Ontario municipalities can write their own codes of conduct and when a counselor breaks those rules cases can be referred to the municipalities' integrity commissioner... the harshest penalty that was allowed under the law was docking a councilor 90 days' pay.

Bill 9 would change this... standardized training and direction for the municipal integrity commissioners... it would also for the first time allow councils to vote to expel elected members of council for particularly serious cases of misconduct.

They have set such a high bar to remove a truly disruptive counselor... the bill requires... the matter goes back to council who have to vote unanimously with the exception of the impugned counselor... There is no other body in Canada where that threshold is that high. If an MPP were to so badly misbehave... that's a simple majority.

Original English Source When a provincial court judge ruled that the city of Waterloo could not clear out an encampment of homeless people in order to make way for public transit development, the premier went nuclear... "It's the most ridiculous ruling I've ever seen... I'll send 50 encampments in his backyard and see how he likes it."

This is about a site in Kitchener... the region conceded in court that all of the factors that were found to breach section 7 charter rights a few years ago have all gotten worse... The judge expanded on the previous ruling saying... that Section 15 equality rights would be breached if the region cleared the encampment.

Section 7 says that the government cannot deny you your physical security... Section 15 says that the government has to guarantee equality under the law regardless of race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age, or mental or physical disability... I suspect that the government will in fact introduce legislation invoking the notwithstanding clause to give municipalities the powers to clear these encampments.

Original English Source The New Democrats... have introduced a bill. They want the government to eliminate so-called restrictive covenants... When a company like Loblaws is negotiating the lease... they can go to the landlord and say, "We will be your anchor tenant... but we want you to promise not to lease any other sites to any other grocer."

I'm remembering one of the original mavericks in capital city politics, Howard Moscoe, dies at age 86... He started off in 1978 as a North York City Councilor... He had a way of communicating which was, shall we say, distinctive... Howard Moscoe was a New Democrat, Mel Lastman was much more center-right.

The commercials that regularly interrupt all YouTube videos... who benefits financially? Why is a publicly funded broadcast like On Poli allowing itself to be interrupted and so crassly commercialized? ... $3 a year per taxpayer. That's what the province of Ontario gives us... it does not cover the full costs... making our content available on YouTube and yes TVO does generate some revenue from these ads... that helps us reach a wider audience and it helps us defray some of those costs.
