In 2004, the average person could focus for 2 and 1/2 minutes. Today, it's 47 seconds. You have to fix your attention span before it's too late. Because if you can't focus, you can't learn. And in the age of AI, that makes you obsolete. As a CEO, board member, advisor to billion-dollar companies, I had to learn to protect my attention like a weapon. So, today I'm giving you a science-backed system to build that deep focus and become immune to distractions. Let's get into it.

First, you really have to understand who you're up against. In 2011, a New York Times reporter asked Steve Jobs if his kids loved the iPad. And his answer, "They haven't used it. We limit how much technology our kids use at home." And think about it, the man who built the iPad didn't let his own kids touch it. And he's not alone. Gates, Zuckerberg, the Snapchat CEO, all of them restrict screen time for their kids. Sean Parker, Facebook's first president, said the goal was to consume as much of your time and attention by giving you that little dopamine head every once in a while. And it's working. Last year alone, Google and Meta earned nearly half a trillion dollars by selling your attention.

But here's the part that keeps me up at night. It's not even humans anymore. Today, AI systems decide what to serve next so they can keep your attention hijacked. You and I are just inventory to be auctioned on the internet every second. This trillion-dollar heist is their business model. If you ask these companies, they would say, "Well, the ads keep the internet free." There's some truth to it. Content is free, but your attention is the prisoner because you're fighting the most sophisticated psychological machinery ever built and optimized by algorithms that know you better than you know yourself. You're not just distracted, you're being harvested.

That's it. And this is even more interesting. She found that we self-interrupt 49% of the time. It's not just notifications, half the time you're doing it to yourself. I see it in my life. When ChatGPT or Gemini is thinking for a few seconds, I immediately reach out for my phone or switch to another tab. I tell myself I'm being productive, but I'm trained to see that 10-second gap as a cue to switch. And you see this everywhere. In elevators, in lines, the moment the world goes quiet, all of us reach for that screen. We've become terrified of that gap. This is the scariest metric. The average American checks their phone 186 times a day. Now, factor in the switching tax of 23 minutes that it takes to regain deep focus after an interruption, and your day isn't just busy, it's shredded into fragmentation. So, the question isn't willpower. To win that 47-second war, you redesign the system. You guard the gate. Here are the three levers that can reset your focus.

The first mistake is thinking that focus is a willpower problem. In a research study often called brain drain, three groups of people were given the same thinking tasks. The only difference was where they put their phones. Group one, on the desk. Group two, in their pockets. Group three, in another room. Now, all phones were off, but the result, the group with the phone in that other room completely dominated. If your phone is in front of you, your brain is burning cycles resisting it. It's waiting. So, stop that fight entirely. Remove the enemy.

So, how do you make this actionable? Here are the three steps I call the three R framework. Reach, roadblocks, and rituals. First, reach. Keep the distraction out of reach. That's it. Maya Angelou didn't write at home. She rented a tiny, anonymous hotel room, plain, quiet. She made distractions physically impossible. If you want to build a masterpiece, you can't do it in a room full of noise. Keep your phone in another room. If it's in the room, a part of your brain will always stay on standby for a signal. Second, roadblock the distraction. Make it expensive for distractions to find you. So, look at your phone, delete that useless app, kill those notifications. Every layer of friction is a victory for your focus. Third, rituals. Now, they help you get straight into action and not distraction. The NYU psychologist Peter Gollwitzer found this. Vague goals fail 62% of the time, but rituals fail only 9% of the time. So, don't rely on trying harder, rely on a trigger. Systems outlive self-control. So, let me share with you my trigger-based ritual. At night, I decide what I will be working on tomorrow morning. So, I leave that document or that screen open on my laptop, and I close everything else. Next morning, when I turn it on, that's the first thing I see. Nothing else is open. That's my focus loop. And you can create your rituals to enter your focus loop.

But getting into that loop is a start. Staying there is the real battle. For that, you need the next framework. So, here's how you reprogram your brain and stay in deep focus. Every time you scroll, every time you switch that dopamine hit of novelty, you're carving a groove in your brain. Do it for years, and that groove becomes a canyon of distraction. But neuroplasticity, fortunately, is a two-way street. You train for 47-second bursts. Now, you can train for 47-minute blocks. One way to do it is the framework I call your SOS for attention. Three simple steps. Sprint, offload, save. First, sprint. Don't aim for 90 minutes of focus. Start with 20, even 15 minutes. When I first tried this, I could barely hold focus for maybe 7 minutes. That's how fragmented I was. But now it's much longer. The mental muscle grows over time. Think of this as going to the gym. The starting weight doesn't matter. Consistency does. Second, offload. After a sprint, go dark. No input, no phone. I focus on recovery. I sometimes just take a walk or sit and daydream. Gloria Mark found that a 20-minute walk can recharge your depleted cognitive battery immediately. So, let your mind offload that weight. And finally, save. This is the 10-second rule. Just 10 seconds of stillness in the middle of a sprint helps you encode data 20 times faster. This was a surprise to me, too. But it's the closest thing to a save button in biology. It's where the learning actually locks in. So, that's the SOS framework. Because attention is not a trade, it's a training. And in training, you're not going to try to run a marathon on day one. You're building the ultimate superpower for 2026. Because in a world of 47-second minds, the person who can hold their focus owns the future.

Now, let me share why attention is the last superpower. Even Superman has its fortress of solitude. Turns out, science has a name for that state. A psychologist named Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and I hope I haven't butchered that name. He's Hungarian-American, and he spent decades studying what he called optimal experience. It's a state where time disappears and work feels completely effortless, even when it's hard. In the movie F1, this is exactly what happens to Brad Pitt's character in the end. The audience, the race, the car, the driver, winning, losing, everything disappears. What remains is just the road ahead. And yes, I have experienced that feeling in my life several times. And it happens to all of us, right? The engineers, musicians, surgeons, researchers, painters, whoever you are. When we are so deeply immersed, the self disappears. And surprisingly, that state of flow is the key to everything we want. People in flow states are more creative, more productive, more deeply happy, and more sustainably fulfilled because flow is where your best work lives. But here's the catch. It often takes 15 to 20 minutes just to even begin entering that flow state. Flow is incompatible with a mind working in 47-second bursts. Flow state happens when you get past the surface and reach that deeper space of inner harmony where who you are and what you do become inseparable.

Anyone can skim the shallows, but can you swim the deep oceans? Because if you can't, AI will happily make you replaceable. So, flow is so critical. And I think it is critical emotionally, too. In your relationships, every time you half listen to someone while glancing at your phone or a watch, you're quietly eroding trust. You're trading presence for performing. Attention is love made visible. Distraction is how we withhold it. And attention is so critical for your peace of mind. The most meaningful questions in life don't have quick 47-second answers. They require sitting with hard things for a long time. Long enough for a clarity to emerge. If you can't sustain attention, you can't sustain inquiry, and you'll never know why you feel empty.

That's the power of attention. And here's why I think attention is your greatest superpower. Years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sitting on a bench watching kids play cricket in the park while my final exam on mathematics was happening in the building right behind me. I had walked out after the first 15 minutes. I read all the questions and none of them made any sense because I hadn't paid attention for years. And there I was, confused, trapped in the fog of my own mind, not knowing where I'm going to go from there. But someone eventually believed in me more than I believed in myself. They loved me more than I loved myself. And most importantly, they paid attention to a lost soul. I felt seen. That simple, generous act of attention changed that kid's life, my life. That was the turning point. If distraction is today's kryptonite, attention is the last greatest superpower.
