我们先从第一小节开始,标题叫做“我们是演化的产物”。大家想想,我们平时做决策的时候,更多是根据理性,还是根据直觉?虽然我们多数人都以理性人(Rational Economic Man: 经济学中假设的能完全理性决策的个体)自居,大部分人在学校里面都学过一点基本的逻辑学,但是,只有在做数学题或者参加逻辑学考试的时候,才会用到逻辑推理,平时在生活中是用不到的。毕竟,逻辑推理是一件让人头疼的事情。想想这些名词,比如什么三段论(Syllogism: 一种由大前提、小前提和结论组成的演绎推理形式)、演绎法(Deduction: 从一般原理推导出特殊结论的推理方法)、肯定前件(Modus Ponens: 一种逻辑推理规则,如果P则Q,P成立,则Q成立)、否定后件(Modus Tollens: 一种逻辑推理规则,如果P则Q,Q不成立,则P不成立)等等,是不是又让你回想起当初学习逻辑学的痛苦经历?

Let's start with the first section, titled "We Are Products of Evolution." Think about it: when we make decisions in our daily lives, do we rely more on reason or intuition? Although most of us consider ourselves "rational economic actors," and most people have learned some basic logic in school, we only use logical reasoning when solving math problems or taking logic exams; it's not typically used in everyday life. After all, logical reasoning can be a headache. Think of terms like syllogism, deduction, modus ponens, modus tollens, and so on. Don't they remind you of the painful experience of studying logic back then?

Why do we dislike logical reasoning? This is because our human cognitive system did not evolve for logical deduction or solving math problems. Except for a very few mathematicians, no one "enjoys" doing math. Logical reasoning is very mentally demanding, and from an evolutionary perspective, making decisions through rational inference is not cost-effective. So, what is the cost-effective way? It is that natural selection has shaped an intuitive system for us. This intuitive system allows us to react directly based on intuition. In our daily lives, we often make judgments without conscious thought; the brain operates automatically, and decisions are made intuitively.

For example, tonight, should I eat KFC or McDonald's? Malatang or fried chicken? Were these decisions made after logical reasoning? No. The reality is, you open a food delivery app, see a place, and just order from it! It's not just small matters like "what to eat tonight"; for many people, even major life decisions like "who to date," "what major to choose in college," or "whether to buy a house" are made based on intuition. We just get a sudden impulse, make a snap decision, and decide to be with someone.

Here, I am not advocating that you should not make decisions based on intuition, but rather based on logical reasoning; that is not the case. In fact, making judgments based on intuition precisely reflects a "sculpting" of our human mind by natural selection. This means that intuition is often very useful for our survival and reproduction. You should know that most of our intuitions are correct. For example, we instinctively pull away from hot objects; we instinctively hesitate when seeing high places like cliffs; we can't help but want to eat delicious food when we smell it; and we instinctively want to win the affection of attractive people. These intuitions are all automatic reactions, without conscious thought.

Argument complete! If our human ancestors had made decisions step-by-step through logical reasoning like this, they would have starved long ago. Therefore, intuition is a very effective tool for our survival and reproduction; its advantages are speed, saving mental effort, and saving time. Think about it, if our early hominid ancestors encountered a large tiger, they wouldn't have time for rational analysis; they would instinctively turn and run. Evolutionary scholars have summarized the intuitions directly related to human survival and reproduction into four categories, collectively known as the F4: Feed, Fight, Flee, and the last F-word related to reproduction.

In fact, beyond these F4 instincts directly related to survival and reproduction, our mental judgments and decisions in relatively complex situations are also made intuitively. This is still done to simplify complex situations and process them efficiently. Scholars have thus constructed the concept of "heuristic." In the Chinese world, some translate it as "启发式" (heuristic: a cognitive shortcut or rule of thumb that simplifies complex problems and quickly finds satisfactory solutions), some as "捷思法" (heuristic: similar to "启发式," referring to quick and simple thinking strategies), and others as "探索法" (heuristic: similar to "启发式," referring to methods for finding solutions when information is incomplete). These translations might sound a bit confusing. In reality, what "heuristic" means is a "cognitive routine." If expressed in a more formal way, it can be translated as "cognitive set," or we can say metaphorically that heuristic actually refers to the mental shortcuts in our brains.

When humans encounter complex situations, they still don't reason through rationality but make judgments based on intuition; this is called a cognitive set. The reason for this is still that logical reasoning is too mentally demanding, too costly, and too slow. Thus, natural selection has created certain thinking patterns for us, allowing us to react quickly and directly provide answers to problems. For example, should I hunt on this mountain today or that mountain? This question is so complex; to truly figure it out, I would have to conduct research, gather data through field observations—such as the number of prey, types of prey, danger levels, and so on—and then analyze and infer based on this data. Oh, it's too much trouble! Compared to making decisions in such a rational way, I might as well observe other people in the tribe, especially the skilled hunter in the tribe. Whichever mountain he goes to, I'll just follow. Furthermore, if everyone goes to the same place, there's strength in numbers, and we can catch more prey. Conformity is such a "convenient method."

German psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer, in his book "Simple Heuristics That Make Us Smart," points out that cognitive heuristics are not merely second-best decision-making tools due to limited brainpower, but are often more effective than complex logical reasoning in many real-world situations. By simplifying the decision-making process, cognitive heuristics can reduce the errors we might make in uncertain situations and provide relatively reliable solutions when information or resources are lacking. Gigerenzer believes that cognitive heuristics are not a sign of carelessness, but rather a manifestation of the brain's efficient operation.

When you use System 2, you need to perform logical reasoning meticulously, which is very mentally demanding, which is why most people dislike doing math problems. Artificial intelligence is very popular now, and to help you understand cognitive heuristics, we can use machine thinking to analogize human thinking. Making judgments and decisions using logical reasoning was the paradigm of the previous generation of artificial intelligence, meaning human experts would pre-program various rules into the machine, and then based on this expert system, the machine would perform logical reasoning. For example, the AI "Deep Blue" that defeated chess grandmaster Gary Kasparov was constructed based on such an expert system. A large amount of hardcoded knowledge was provided by human chess grandmasters. The mental model "Deep Blue" employed during gameplay was equivalent to what Kahneman calls System 2.

However, this type of AI, built on expert systems, could not defeat human players in Go once it transitioned to the domain of Go. This is because Go is much more complex than chess. Chess has approximately 10^40 possible positions, while Go has about 10^170 possible positions. This astronomical number far exceeds the total number of atoms in the universe. No human expert could possibly fully contemplate so many possible positions. Expert systems excel at reasoning within a finite state space, but in a "complex game" like Go, their computational power proves insufficient.

As everyone knows, AlphaGo, which defeated human Go players, is a new generation of artificial intelligence, built on the neural network paradigm. Humans do not need to pre-program Go rules for this type of AI; instead, the machine learns autonomously based on a vast number of game records. It can also continuously improve its strategies by playing against itself. The mental model employed by such a trained neural network when playing Go is equivalent to what Kahneman calls System 1, and is thus more akin to human decisions made based on intuition and cognitive heuristics. For example, why AlphaGo makes a particular move cannot be explained even by the programmers who wrote it; its operation is a "black box." Similarly, human Go masters make their moves based on an intuitive feeling.

Intuitive cognitive heuristics can be understood as neural networks trained for us humans by millions of years of natural selection, with all parameters already tuned. Our brains contain many types of such neural networks, which we can call upon at will and apply in various scenarios. After external information is input to us, we don't know how these networks operate; it's simply a black box operation that directly leads to a decision. In short, the reason we use cognitive heuristics or thinking patterns to deal with complex problems is ultimately because our brain's computational power is limited. If everything required rational thought, our reactions would not keep up with the response speed demanded by the external world. Thus, natural selection has equipped our cognitive system with mental shortcuts; when encountering a corresponding situation, we can simply click.

Alright, after talking so much about how useful cognitive heuristics are, does that mean we only need to rely on intuition and make snap decisions? The answer is: not quite. The advantage of cognitive heuristics is providing quick reactions, but what makes them successful can also lead to failure. The wrong decisions we make in life are also caused by cognitive heuristics. The cognitive heuristics endowed by natural selection were mostly effective in the past, but in the face of relatively complex modern life situations, they often fail or even bring negative effects. This is because our current human cognitive system is "out of sync" with the times.

The various cognitive heuristics in our mental system are products of millions of years of natural selection. In most cases, these mental shortcuts provide intuitive reactions that are correct and beneficial for our survival and reproduction. However, the human species has one unique aspect compared to other animals: our current living environment has undergone drastic changes compared to that of our ancient ancestors. From the East African savannas millions of years ago to today's concrete jungles of skyscrapers, this environmental change could be devastating for many other species. Of course, this demonstrates the strong adaptability of humans, but it also shows that modern humans live in a particularly "awkward" situation.
所谓“拧巴”是指我们现代人身上的本能、直觉、认知定式,都是为了适应远古时代的生存环境而被自然选择筛选出来的。然而环境变化太快了,人类的农业革命距今不到8000年,工业革命距今200多年,信息革命也就最近几十年的事情。别看这8000年、200年好像挺久远的,但放在生物演化的视角来看,根本不值一提。生物本能的演化,至少是以十万年乃至百万年为单位来衡量的。而这就造成了所谓的“演化时滞”(Evolutionary Lag: 生物演化速度未能跟上环境变化速度,导致生物特征与当前环境不适应的现象)。也就是说,人类本能的演化没跟上环境变化的节奏,存在时间上的滞后。

The "awkwardness" refers to the fact that our modern human instincts, intuitions, and cognitive heuristics were all selected by natural selection to adapt to the ancient living environment. However, environmental changes have been too rapid: the agricultural revolution occurred less than 8,000 years ago, the industrial revolution just over 200 years ago, and the information revolution only in recent decades. While 8,000 years or 200 years might seem like a long time, from the perspective of biological evolution, it's negligible. The evolution of biological instincts is measured in units of at least hundreds of thousands or even millions of years. This has led to what is called "evolutionary lag." In other words, the evolution of human instincts has not kept pace with the rhythm of environmental change, resulting in a temporal lag.
所以这就造成,别看我们今天人穿西装、打领带、用着智能手机,但其实我们和几百万年前生活在非洲的祖先,从心智和本能方面来讲没有太大的区别,我们现代人都是穿着西装的原始人。那这就会造成一个难题,就是说我们的心智是为了适应远古环境而演化而来的,而今天我们生活在北京、纽约这样的都市里面,我们面对的是大规模的陌生人通过互联网而协作的环境。那这时候,我们的远古本能和认知定式还管用吗?原来的神经网络还能适应我们当下的新情境吗?答案是:难说。

This means that even though we wear suits, ties, and use smartphones today, in terms of our minds and instincts, we are not very different from our ancestors who lived in Africa millions of years ago. Modern humans are essentially primitive people in suits. This creates a dilemma: our minds evolved to adapt to ancient environments, but today we live in metropolises like Beijing and New York, facing an environment where large numbers of strangers collaborate through the internet. So, are our ancient instincts and cognitive heuristics still effective? Can our original neural networks still adapt to our current new situations? The answer is: it's hard to say.
一个典型的例子就是遇到美食就忍不住想要大吃特吃。这个本能在远古时代是很有用的,毕竟在远古时代食物相对匮乏,而且各种储存食物的手段尚未发明。好不容易看到一片果树林或者打到一头猎物,那还不得撒开了大吃一顿?这就相当于用自己的脂肪细胞当作“人肉冰箱”来存储食物。所以,看到美食就想大吃特吃的本能,在远古时代是非常有用的。但是到了今天,工业化批量生产出来的食物既丰富又便宜,是唾手可得,而且营养价值还特别高、特别美味。那在这种情况下,我们依然还在运用远古本能,见到美食就忍不住大吃特吃,于是在今天与肥胖相关的疾病,包括心脏病、高血压、高血脂、糖尿病等等,就成了人类第一大杀手了。

A classic example is the irresistible urge to feast when encountering delicious food. This instinct was very useful in ancient times, as food was relatively scarce and various methods of food storage had not yet been invented. After finally finding a fruit grove or catching prey, one would naturally gorge oneself. This was equivalent to using one's fat cells as a "human refrigerator" to store food. Therefore, the instinct to eat a lot when seeing delicious food was very useful in ancient times. But today, industrially mass-produced food is abundant, cheap, readily available, and also highly nutritious and delicious. 把自己当作变量,是要识别出那些非理性的因素,并且给它们起个名字。要知道,命名是认识的开始。就像《西游记》里面的金角大王和银角大王的紫金葫芦一样,只要能叫得出对方的名字,对方就会被收进葫芦里。虽然我们在往后在思考和决策的过程中,难免还是会受到非理性因素的影响,但是我们知道它们的名字,它们叫作确认偏误、认知失调、幸存者偏误、聚焦错觉、基本归因错误、自利性偏误、邓宁-克鲁格效应、禀赋效应、从众效应、框架效应。虽然我们手中没有紫金葫芦,但是当这些个偏误和效应出现的时候,我们能认出它们,然后自知它们在影响着自己。

Treating oneself as a variable means identifying those irrational factors and giving them names. You see, naming is the beginning of understanding. Just like the purple gold gourd of King Golden Horn and King Silver Horn in "Journey to the West," as long as you can call out the opponent's name, they will be sucked into the gourd. Although in our subsequent thinking and decision-making processes, we will inevitably still be influenced by irrational factors, we know their names: confirmation bias, cognitive dissonance, survivorship bias, focusing illusion, fundamental attribution error, self-serving bias, Dunning-Kruger effect, endowment effect, conformity effect, framing effect. Although we don't have a purple gold gourd in our hands, when these biases and effects appear, we can recognize them and be aware that they are influencing us.
苏格拉底(Socrates)说过“认识你自己”。这句话的原意是要认识自己的无知,也就是“自知无知”。不过放在这里,我们可以说“认识你自己的非理性”。只有认识到自身难以摆脱的非理性因素,理性的修炼才真正开始。斯宾诺莎(Baruch Spinoza)说过“自由就是对必然性的认识”。斯宾诺莎这话的意思就是说,真正的自由不是说自己能够摆脱必然的自然法则对自己的影响和束缚,而恰恰是要认识到我们其实每一个人都被情欲、都被自然的法则所制约,这是逃无可逃的。但是,有些人他不知道人的这种根本处境,以为自己是不受制约的,而产生了一种虚假的自由的幻觉,这其实是不自由的。而真正的自由,恰恰是要认识到自己的会被自然法则所制约。当你认识到这一点,当你把自己也会犯浑也当作一个变量的时候,你反而就获得了一种真正的自由。

Socrates said, "Know thyself." The original meaning of this phrase was to recognize one's own ignorance, or "knowing one's ignorance." However, in this context, we can say, "Know your own irrationality." Only by recognizing the inescapable irrational factors within oneself does the cultivation of rationality truly begin. Baruch Spinoza said, "Freedom is the recognition of necessity." Spinoza's meaning is that true freedom is not about being able to escape the influence and constraints of inevitable natural laws, but rather precisely recognizing that each of us is constrained by passions and natural laws, and there is no escape from this. However, some people are unaware of this fundamental human condition, believing themselves to be unconstrained, thereby creating an illusion of false freedom, which is actually a lack of freedom. True freedom, on the other hand, is precisely recognizing that one is constrained by natural laws. When you realize this, when you treat your own occasional foolishness as a variable, you paradoxically gain a true freedom.
其实,这就是最近这些年心理学家和哲学家爱提的一个概念,在本书第七章也介绍了,那就是元认知(Metacognition: 对自身认知过程的认知,即“思考自己的思考”)。元认知就是对认知的认知。具备元认知能力的人,能够跳出自己的第一反应,去观察、反思自己的思维过程,避免陷于单一的视角和狭隘的判断。这就是把“我”当作一个变量来看待,甚至像看待他人那样看待自己。当你独立思考的时候,能在心中与另一个自己对话,这就是元认知在发挥作用。你不再只有一个孤单的自我,你能学会模拟一个外部视角的自己,像朋友一样与你辩论,提醒你可能会犯的糊涂。正如卞之琳(Bian Zhilin)那首著名的诗所言:“你在桥上看风景,看风景的人在楼上看你。”拥有元认知能力的人,不仅能够看见风景,还能看见那个正在看风景的自己。

In fact, this is a concept that psychologists and philosophers have loved to discuss in recent years, also introduced in Chapter 7 of this book: metacognition. Metacognition is cognition about cognition. A person with metacognitive ability can step outside their initial reactions to observe and reflect on their own thought processes, avoiding being trapped in a single perspective and narrow judgments. This is about treating "I" as a variable, even seeing oneself as one would see another. When you think independently, you can have a dialogue with another self in your mind—this is metacognition at work. You no longer have only a solitary self; you can learn to simulate an external perspective of yourself, debating with you like a friend, reminding you of potential confusions. As Bian Zhilin's famous poem says: "You stand on the bridge and view the scenery; The sightseer views you from the balcony." A person with metacognitive ability can not only see the scenery but also see the self who is viewing the scenery.
